What are we up to lately

Can't believe I haven't blogged for so long. Life was not bad without it. :)

Well what are we up to lately? Isaac and Isabel started swimming lesson three weeks ago. They are in the same class and their lesson is 3pm every Saturday for half an hour. For the first time I could finally sit and watch instead of going into the water with them. Every Saturday afternoon the whole family goes together and it has become our family time. Mark and I were very impressed with Isaac's progress. He absolutely loves swimming and his fear of water has totally gone. I don't know whether it's because he got older and more brave or it's because Isabel is in the same class with him. Isabel is doing very well too. She is such a water baby, she is the youngest in the class but she swims fastest. Today the kids swam for two hours in total and we had to drag them out of the water and force them to leave.

As for Isabel's dancing class, she has improved so much since the start of this term three weeks ago. She has become part of the team (as opposed to the "outsider" and "later comer") and has done so well in following instructions and doing all the poses and actions. She still wanted me to hold her hand, stand next to her and do everything together for the first three minutes of the class. Then she would wave her hand at me and say to me, "I can dance now, you can go now. You go and sit on the couch and watch me." I was more than happy to follow her order.

Isaac is still into drawing and writing letters and numbers. I'm no longer paranoid about his academic knowledge because he has been very good with all alphabets and numbers for a long time and he is learning new words everyday. I reckon he should do pretty easily when he starts school in a couple of months time. Thanks to having a big brother, Isabel is very advanced academically. We went to Isaac's school's parents orientation last Tuesday and had good impression. In two weeks time, Isaac will start his orientation program. Would be interesting to see how he feels. We have been telling him constantly about going to school and hopefully he will adjust to the new life easily.

And the big people...
  • Mark was busy working on our brand new family budget, thinking hard how we could save/invest for our retirement, and getting some finanical advisers to draw a blueprint for us... For obvious reasons it's a depressing topic for me and I had no interest participating in his initiative. I'm still in the process of trying to commit myself to get on the same page as him.
  • We also briefly looked at properties on the internet and were shocked finding out that the housing prices had gone up so much since last time we looked (5 years ago). We went to two open houses two weeks ago just for fun. We liked both but both were too expensive. I guess we have given up this idea for the time being.
  • My work has been so busy and I'm just thankful I don't work full time. So looking forward to the Christmas break - however I probably won't enjoy it as much as previous years because we now have a budget to stick to!
Lastly, my camera must be going rusty. Must bring it out one day and take some shots!

Visiting Rebecca and Julia

We went to Julia's house today and spent most of the day chatting and eating. Haven't seen them for almost 10 months and we discovered Isabel is a bit taller than Rebecca!! (Rebecca is 19 months older than Isabel). Isabel also looks more solid and stronger than Rebecca. Apparently Isabel is about 2kg heavier. Geez, aren't I proud! Besides the genetics factor, I reckon Rebecca is much more healthier than Isabel because they have got "No junk food" policy in the house which was why I had to take home all the yummy snacks I bought for them. On the other hand, Isabel is obsessed with "yummy stuff" and I just hope she would slow down a bit. After all I don't want her to be more than size 12. :)

It's so interesting to see Rebecca and Isabel together because they looked like twins! Next time I shall bring the camera and take some photos for them. Three kids played well. We could tell Isaac was still in love with Rebecca, hehe.

Kids talk - "What makes you happy makes me happy"

Wandering around in the shops with kids and I heard Isaac saying "What makes you happy makes me happy!" I didn't pay much attention to it until Isaac repeated it many times. I asked him where he learned it from and he said "from TV!" So kids can get something positive from watching TV, wonderful! He seemed to understand the meaning of it, but I still explained to him a bit more. Then I said "It's very true. What makes you happy makes mommy happy too!" He nodded and said "Yeah I know!" He is really a very affectionate and sweet boy.

The forgotten anniversary

It was 4:10pm and I was writing down "Paid 10/10/09" on a bill that I just paid online... and looking at the date I wrote I realised it's 10th anniversary of our first date!!!

Well we totally forgot about it. We were not planning to do anything anyway (in another word: no promised gift from Mark to me), so it's understandable that we were not really looking forward to it and therefore forgot it.

I rushed downstairs and showed the date on the bill to Mark (who was out of breath on the treadmill) and he quickly realised what I was trying to tell him. We both seemed shocked that we forgot about it and had a big laugh.

Quickly I decided that I wouldn't bother cooking dinner and instead having some Thai take away and some yummy Chinese roast duck for dinner. The weather is still stupid today, cold and wet and certainly didn't give us any mood for eating out. Some take away and some white wine seemed to be perfect celebration. So we did enjoy our take away dinner, wine, apple danish and icecream very much. Considering we have been on the strict diet lately, tonight's dinner was the perfect anniversary feast!

Daddy's first ... pedicure!!

After months of persuasion, Mark finally agreed to go and have a pedicure to cure his dry and cracked heels (yuck!). He was very embarrassed... But we did pick a quiet nail saloon and I took him in, made him comfortable before I left with kids. How amusing, I couldn't help smiling while walking around in the shops waiting for him.

Half an hour later, he came out and we sat down at Donut King to have coffee and donuts. I couldn't wait to check out his new feet. Great result! Before I asked, Mark started describing to me the nice massage, the amount of dead skin came off... (yeah yeah I knew it all but I was trying not to picture that, haha). "So did you enjoy it?" I finally got to ask the question. "Oh yeah, I enjoyed it VERY much!" He answered without hesitation, and added "I think I will do it more often!" Geez, see what I have talked him into?! Another personal care expenses! Perhaps we can send the kids to the babysitter one day and Mark and I could go to the nail saloon, sit next to each other enjoying a pedi together. What a scene! :)

P.S. We did do something special today for the long weekend - we took a train to Chatswood and had Yum Cha!

P.P.S. A little drama for our long weekend - power was off for almost two hours today from 4:45m to 6:30pm due to thunder storm. We discovered we had quite a lot of candles in the house. So we had two hours of romantic setting: candles everywhere in the house. We didn't do anything romantic though - kids were playing play-doh, Mark was napping on the couch and I was doing my dumb bell exercise (trying to get rid of the floppy bits on the arms for the summer and for the new dresses).

Raining long weekend

Tomorrow is Labour Day public holiday - the last public holiday before Christmas. I have been planning to do something this long weekend. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. It's been raining and cold! A few days ago it was over 30c and felt like summer and this weekend it's been like winter again. Annoying.

So we stayed home and did our usual shopping centre wandering around thing. It's dangerous because I have been in a "purchasing" mood for the last month and couldn't go passed any nice looking dresses... I did announce to Mark a week ago that I would be on a 3-month shopping ban. Unfortunately I couldn't control myself and committed crime last Thursday evening... After buying another new (and gorgeous) dress again today, I am seriously on a shopping ban. Must be strong!

Kids talk - "Mommy I love you because..."

Isaac and Isabel are very sweet kids. They often said to me out of blue "Mommy I love you!" I always replied "Ohhhh...I love you too!". One day I decided to "investigate"... So when Isaac said to me again "Mommy I love you!", I said "Why do you love me?" Isaac replied quickly, "Because you are so pretty and you are so nice! You cook dinner for me, you look after me!" WOW, I was impressed! So someone has noticed my hard work. I felt it's all worth it. :)

When I asked same question to Isabel when she told me "Mommy I love you!" - which she says many times a day to me, she thought about it for a few seconds, then said "Because you are a girl like me!". Haha...
